Afterschool Special

Afterschool (2008)

I've been meaning to watch Afterschool since I first saw the trailer over two years ago. But I had a hard time getting my hands on a copy mainly because I kept thinking it was called Afterschool Special. Last week, I finally realized, thanks to Wikipedia, that I got the title wrong.

I'm watching it right now, and although I still love the atmosphere and the main plot, it's too slow for me. It's so slow it's making me want to sleep. I'm wondering when things will turn up. It sucks though that I'm not enjoying it since I've been wanting to see this movie for over two years. I still love it though, because I know the movie's deep, tragic and meaningful, it's just a real drag to watch.

But then again, I guess its slowness is part of the movie's style. It's styled like a documentary (without the interviews), in line with the main characters video project, and timed in real time. It makes the movie more real. But stories (and movies) are supposed to be real life with the boring parts cut off. This movie forgot to cut the boring parts off. Hmm. I guess I just answered my own question--the movie's supposed to be real life.

I told you it was going to be a deep and meaningful movie. Now, I really love the movie. Because sometimes, you need the boring stuff to make everything else more meaningful.
